The eyes of any mixed gas closed circuit system are the oxygen sensors it relies upon to read and inform the electronics or user of the PO2 within the breathing loop. Without accurate and reliable sensors a system cannot properly control oxygen addition or maximize the benefits of running elevated PO2s.
SMI sensors have been designed specifically for use in hyperbaric applications and within closed circuit UBAs operating at elevated PPO2s.
Their operating life is typically twelve months with correct handling, and the sensors slow decay rate helps to maintain system calibration for extended periods. (**It is essential that verification of the calibration be conducted prior to diving during the unit specific pre-dive check.)

 | Given the importance of the oxygen sensors in the performance of the unit, only Steam Machines, Inc. approved and tested sensors should be used in Steam Machines, Inc products.
The SMS202 is the recommended sensor for the PRISM Topaz and SM1600 closed circuit UBA's.
They are also used in legacy sets such as the Mk15, Mk15.5 and CCR1000's with both analog and digital electronics.

| General Sensor Handling Tips: |
These are regular care procedures for any galvanic sensor which may help prolong their life, include:
1. Ensure the sensor is not exposed to temperatures in excess of 110 degrees Farenheit (as may dry out the electrolyte required for the galvanic reaction between the cathode and anode).
2. Ensure the sensor is protected from physical shock i.e. not dropped or banged (reduces the working life by breaking/ chipping the lead anode quicker than it can be consumed).
3. Ensure sensing membrane at the front is not touched or pierced (this is a Teflon membrane of calibrated thickness and oil residue from fingers can impede gas diffusion across it. Piercing may also allow the electrolyte to leak - which is highly alkaline).
4. Ensure sensor back is kept free of obstructions (has ports for allowing pressure equalization across the sensor so it can decompress/offgas). The SMS202 and SMS201 have a reinforced backplate with triple off-gassing ports - do not block. 5. When first opened or after prolonged storage in an enclosed container, the sensor should be allowed to settle. (Air must diffuse through the sensing membrane to reactivate the galvanic reaction - during storage all available oxygen is consumed from the surrounding environment and the sensor effectively goes to sleep), typically 12-24 hours is needed for reliable, stable readings to reoccur.
6. Do not immerse the sensor (if the loop should flood with fresh water it may be possible to recover the sensor by immediately placing it in an airing or drying cabinet. If it should flood with salt water it may be possible to recover the sensor by immediately rinsing it in clean fresh water and then putting it in an airing or drying cabinet. However, neither of these solutions is ideal as the sensing membrane will be damaged, reducing the response time of the sensor and reducing its projected life span). |
